What to Wear for Family Photos
Let’s be honest, picking out clothes for a photoshoot can be incredibly stressful. If you have multiple people at the shoot, that stress is just be multiplied. I’m not going to say that after reading this post you’ll never have pre-shoot wardrobe anxiety again but I hope it’ll make some decisions a little easier!
My number 1 rule of thumb when getting ready for a shoot is to wear what you feel AMAZING in.
That’s it. I wholeheartedly believe that when you feel your best, you exude the confidence that makes you look fantastic. AMAZING to you might mean feeling glamorous, comfy/cozy, or wearing whatever you regularly put on because you feel like yourself! With that in mind, I do have a few tips for families. (Tips for couples coming soon!)
1. Don’t match! Just don’t. Not everyone needs to be in white tees and khakis for us to recognize that you're together. You’re your own person. The photo won’t look cluttered if you are wearing different outfits, I promise.
2. Dress as if you are attending the same event. Imagine you have an invitation to a summer barbecue, a winter holiday party, a beach wedding, or something else entirely. You probably wouldn’t all match or necessarily coordinate outfits, but if you look like a cohesive unit that could theoretically attend an event together then you’re on the right track.
3. Consider letting older children pick out their own outfits. Give them a guideline of the event you’re “attending” and general color palette (jewel tones, brights, etc.) and let them pick out of their own closet. Tweaks can be made later to make sure no one clashes, but the more freedom you give them, the happier they’ll be at the shoot and that is far and away the most important thing.
4. Patterns and layers are your friend! You might be afraid that they’ll add extra pounds or draw too much attention, but a great family photo almost always includes some unique accessories and interesting patterns. If you personally aren’t comfortable wearing a pattern, put it on the baby! Little boys look adorable in vests and scarves are great on pretty much everyone :)
Whether you take or leave any of the above tips, wear what you feel great in, don't overthink your clothes, and enjoy this opportunity to shower love on your family! Photos are meant to preserve your memories of each other in that moment so it's okay if your littlest lady won't wear her hair bow or that none of the kids want to keep their shoes on. That's your life and it's great!
