  • Lots of variety
  • Unbeatable evening light
  • Very quiet
  • Easy to access
  • Good for families with small children
  • Bathrooms

Cons

  • Can be buggy in the summer

Rockford Arboretum

(not to be confused with Klehm Arboretum)

Features

  • Split rail fences
  • Massive oak with low hanging branches

Pros

  • Convenient location to central Rockford
  • Quiet in the summer or weekdays 
  • Amazing morning light
  • Fall colors are awesome on their ancient trees
  • Good for families with small children

Cons

  • Can be easy to miss the entrance and is hard to turn into if you're coming in from the North
  • Evening light can be a hit or miss
  • Cloudy days are a bummer here
  • VERY busy in the fall, especially in the evenings and weekends
  • No bathrooms
  • Not a lot of variety
  • Closed in the winter

Rock Cut State Park

  • Lake
  • Woods
  • Small glens
  • Open fields
  • Bridges
  • Creeks

Pros

  • Tons of variety
  • Great if you want a lot of different looks
  • Bathrooms
  • Pretty convenient location
  • Beautiful year round

Cons

  • There are always people around
  • Usually buggy in the summer
  • Cell reception in the park is spotty and it can be easy to get lost in if you aren't familiar

Beckman Mills Park

Features

  • Small covered bridge
  • River
  • Man made waterfall
  • Massive weeping willow
  • Split rail fences
  • Old wooden buildings

Pros

  • Uniquely quaint
  • Perfect for offbeat photos
  • Occasionally there are horses in a nearby pasture which look great in the background

Cons

  • Location is far north-west of Rockford in Wisconsin
  • Your cell service will probably be spotty most of the way 
  • Isn't super accessible
  • Crazy busy on weekends

Nicholas Conservatory

Features

  • Large greenhouse filled with tropical plants
  • Koi pond

Pros

  • Amazing light no matter what time of day or what the weather is like
  • The temperature is great, especially in the winter
  • Easy to lean into the tropical theme or not depending on your style
  • Fairly quiet all the time
  • Perfect in the winter when it’s too cold outside
  • Very nice bathrooms
  • Easy to access
  • Great for engagement shoots, small families, or newlywed photos

Cons

  • Cost of admission + photographing fee is >$35
  • Not great if your kids like to run around and play
  • If you aren’t a fan of tropical plants, you won’t like the conservatory

Winnebago County Forest Preserve

Features

  • Winding walking path
  • Quarry-like lake
  • Groves of pine trees and shrubs
  • Fairytale style woods

Pros

  • Great winter light
  • Beautiful year round
  • Is easily accessible
  • Some flowering trees in the spring
  • Always very quiet
  • Outhouse bathrooms
  • If you are looking for early morning photos, this is the best location because of the fog in the spring/fall rising off of the lake

Cons

  • Location can be far for some 
  • It gets swampy after a heavy rain which may mean a last minute change of location if there was a hard rain the day of/before the shoot 

City Market/Rock River Area

124 N Water St, Rockford, IL

  • Old brick buildings
  • River
  • A few large trees, shrubs, and grass
  • Easy walk up to State St. for downtown or bridge photos
  • Beige stone buildings
  • General urban feel
  • Fountain in the summer

Pros

  • Easy access
  • Central location to Rockford
  • Parking is a breeze
  • Great for families with small children
  • Perfect if you don’t want “woodsy” photos

Cons

  • No easy bathroom access
  • Impossible to shoot here during City Market on Friday nights in the summer
  • Light can be a hit or miss
  • Can be busy with people walking or photographers

Davis Park and Railroad Walking Bridge

  • Awesome railroad walking bridge
  • River view
  • Great fall colors
  • Has some old buildings in the background
  • Stone walls

Pros

  • Super unique
  • Central to Rockford

Cons

  • No bathrooms
  • Can be busy on the bridge
  • Parking can be tricky to get to

Sinnissippi Gardens 

(not to be confused with Sinnissippi Park)

  • Summer and early fall rose garden
  • Classic white arbors
  • Pond
  • White gazebo
  • Woodsy glen
  • River view

Pros

  • Easily accessible and central
  • Nice bathrooms
  • Great for families with small children
  • Perfect if you aren't crazy about a woodsy shoot
  • Gorgeous roses
  • Still beautiful in winter

Cons

  • Avoid at all cost on homecoming/prom weekends
  • #1 photographed spot in Rockford
  • Always busy

Places to Avoid

Anderson Japanese Gardens: As beautiful as it is, the cost for the photo permit simply isn't worth it unless it has sentimental reasons

Klehm Arboretum: Again, the permit cost isn't worth it. 

Midway Village: They no longer allow photos here and are very strict about enforcing that policy.
